What is Yoga?

Yoga emphasizes holistic well-being. It encapsulates ethical principles on top of physical exercise making it a way of living instead of just a way to move the body.

Yoga originated in India thousands of years ago but has gained global popularity as an exercise in more recent years. At its core, yoga combines physical postures (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama), meditation, and ethical principles such as non-violence, truthfulness, and self-discipline to achieve balance and harmony in body, mind, and spirit. Each component has its own function: The postures or poses improve flexibility, strength, and balance. The breathwork promotes relaxation, focus, and energy flow. While the meditation calms the mind and enhances awareness, helping the typical yoga practitioner achieve a state of inner peace.

There are many forms of yoga available today but the more widely practiced are Hatha, Vinyasa, and Ashtanga. Whether you prefer the gentle and meditative approach of Hatha yoga, the dynamic flow of Vinyasa yoga, or the rigorous structure of Ashtanga yoga, incorporating different styles into your practice allows you to explore and experience the diverse benefits of yoga, ranging from physical fitness and flexibility to mental clarity and spiritual growth.

Many people choose to practice yoga in a dedicated space like a yoga studio or fitness center. This is because joining a gym offers equipment and facilities like yoga mats, blocks, straps, and bolsters which can make yoga practice enjoyable and comfortable . These equipment reduce strain, enable deeper stretches, add support and stability, and reduce the risk of slip and injuries.
